Abstract

The Patani conflict has been going on since 1786, this conflict began when the area of Southern Thailand formerly led by the Patani Sultanate was later dominated by the Kingdom of Thailand. The control of the Patani territory by the Kingdom of Thailand poses a threat to the identity of the Patani community exacerbated on the grounds of economic prosperity. The rebel movement was born in Southern Thailand in 1902, the movement named themselves Orang Melayu Islam Patani (OMIP). However, OMIP is now split into three groups. The first group holds to the original interests of OMIP and uses violent means to achieve its interests. The second group consists of academics who gain knowledge outside Thailand and believe that violent means are no longer effective in achieving OMIP's interests so that a new approach is needed through nonviolent means. The third group is a fraction of the first group but in order to achieve its interests, this group is actively involved in politics and government in Thailand. The outbreak of OMIP would, of course, have much more to do with the conflict in Patani and on the other hand the conflict in Patani was also a factor in the breakup of OMIP itself.
