Struggling to Recover Without a Formal Rehabilitation Program: A Case Study of Drug Users
Abstract
The recovery process has challenges at every stage and requires a supportive and adequate program. The high number of single-use drug users in Indonesia after the COVID-19 pandemic is not supported by adequate rehabilitation services. The negative stigma attached to drug users can also hinder efforts to participate in rehabilitation programs. This study explored the recovery process of drug users without formal rehabilitation program services. The method used is a single instrumental case study with thematic analysis on individuals undergoing a 6-year recovery period. The thematic analysis found that participants progressed through the stages of change theory to achieve recovery. Despite a relapse, the participant reached the final stage. In each phase, there are crucial things that can affect the course of the recovery process. One of them is the family, which has an important role in helping drug users to recover. Further research can be conducted using other methods or approaches, and with participants who face different difficulties or challenges
